About Hurley
Hurley Village, Berkshire's "Gorgeous on Thames"
Hurley is a Thames-side village and civil parish in Berkshire, sitting between Marlow and Henley-on-Thames. It’s best known for its riverside setting, historic buildings, and easy access to the Thames Path for walking, boating and days outdoors.
What you’ll find in Hurley today
Hurley is small, but it’s not sleepy. In the village you’ll find local businesses including a general store, pubs and restaurants, plus riverside features that make it a popular base for exploring the Thames Valley. The parish council also highlights Hurley weir as a recognised test for canoeists and notes the village’s annual regatta on the Thames.
If you’re visiting, you’re here for the simple pleasures: a riverside stroll, a pub lunch, and that feeling of being somewhere with deep roots.
A short history of Hurley
Hurley’s history is closely tied to the river and to its former monastery. Visit Windsor describes records of a ford as early as the 6th century, and notes that a monastery was founded here in 1086 by Geoffrey de Mandeville, later dissolved in 1536.
Hurley also appears in Domesday Book, recorded as a settlement in Berkshire with 47 households in 1086, which places it among the larger settlements of that time with records of a church on the site of the current Church as far back as 700 AD.
You can still see the legacy of this period in and around the church. St Mary the Virgin Church on Hurley High Street is a Grade II* listed building, and local parish history explains how the Dissolution led to the demolition of parts of the priory church, leaving what is broadly the church you see today.
Hurley Lock and the River Thames
A short walk from the High Street brings you to Hurley Lock and weir. The lock is commonly described as first built in 1773 by the Thames Navigation Commissioners, and the wider area remains a hub for river life, from boating to paddling.

Why people love living in Hurley
Hurley offers the kind of day-to-day quality of life people look for when they want countryside calm without feeling cut off. The village has a strong community feel, with familiar faces, local events, and places where you naturally bump into neighbours.
You’ve also got the River Thames on your doorstep, which shapes how people spend their free time. Riverside walks, boating, paddleboarding, and relaxed evenings by the water are all part of the rhythm here, and it’s easy to head out for a short stroll or a longer Thames Path route.
Practicality matters too. Hurley sits between Marlow and Henley, with Maidenhead nearby, so you can get to shops, schools, stations and work without living in a busy town centre. For many residents, that balance is exactly the point: a village home with good access to everything else.
